* VEDDER KICKS OFF LOLLAPALOOZA A surprise appearance by PEARL JAM legend EDDIE VEDDER kicked off the Lollapalooza music festival on Friday when he appeared on stage with BEN HARPER at Chicago's Grant Park. The rock veteran was introduced by "special friend" Harper at the three-day American festival, before performing a special sit-down set with the ecstatic audience. Texas-based symphonic rockers The Polyphonic Spree also wowed the crowd with a choral rendition of Nirvana's Lithium in a performance complete with tapdancers, while British band The Fratellis, M.I.A., The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem also took to the stage. The first day of festivities was brought to a resounding close by French electronic duo Daft Punk, who shut the night down with an explosive act that included a psychedelic light show. Lollapalooza will end on Sunday . * MADONNA ADOPTION OFFICIALS 'CAN'T AFFORD' FLIGHT TO LONDON Pop superstar MADONNA's plans to complete the adoption process for baby David Banda have suffered a setback - because Malawian child welfare authorities can't afford the flight to the U.K. A welfare officer from the 23-month-old's native country was expected to travel to London in May to determine whether Banda can be officially adopted by the Music hitmaker and her husband Guy Ritchie, who brought him back to the U.K. from a Malawian orphanage last October . But Penston Kilembe, the director of Malawi's child welfare services, admits the authorities have faced financial difficulties which have forced them to postpone their official visit until later this year . He says, "We have been unable to travel because of logistical problems. You know it requires some resources for me to travel." However, Kilembe hinted the Hollywood couple have already met all of their adoption requirements. He adds, "What we expect is that the child must be provided all the necessities of basic needs for him to grow up." Kilembe hopes to make the trip to the U.K. by the end of this month . * SISTER OF MASSACRE VICTIM UPSET ABOUT NAS SHOW LATEST: The sister of a student killed by gunman SEUNG HUI CHO has spoken out about the inclusion of rapper NAS in an upcoming Virginia Tech benefit concert. Following reports that families of seven of the April massacre's victims are unhappy about Nas playing at the upcoming 'spirit-lifting' concert, Alicia Farrell feels a performance by the rapper - whose songs include Got Ur Self A... and Shoot 'Em Up - will be "inappropriate". Farrell, whose brother Jarrett Lane was among the 32 people slain by gunman Seung Hui Cho, says, "My issue is not with Nas or his lyrics in any other place, but this is an opportunity for healing in the community. "It's the most inappropriate thing I could imagine hearing at such an event." The concert, which is also slated to feature performances by the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer, will take place on 6 September . Organisers state they have no plans to revise the line-up. *** SPOILER ALERT *** * WILLIAMS AND BECKHAM TO PLAY DESPERATE GAY COUPLE? British pop star ROBBIE WILLIAMS and soccer ace DAVID BECKHAM are set to star in DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES - as a gay couple, according to reports. The pair, who both currently reside in Los Angeles, are show creator Marc Cherry's top choices to play the best friends of another homosexual couple - the latest characters to move into Wisteria Lane. Cherry says, "David and Robbie are perfect to star as the new neighbours' best friends; the gorgeous, eccentric couple flown over from Blighty . "We haven't had that kind of wow for the wives since Jesse Metcalfe left and we want it to cause such a stir when they turn out to be together. "David's keen, but though the obvious choice was to work with Tom Cruise, we wanted someone who matches him in height and well, Britishness, so Robbie is the one. They're both funny, game for a laugh and ridiculously macho, so it should work wonderfully... the English are pitch-perfect for sending themselves up." * CRISS: 'KISS REUNION WILL HAVE TO BE FAIR' Rocker PETER CRISS insists a full KISS reunion is unlikely - until band leaders PAUL STANLEY and GENE SIMMONS agree to share the wealth. The drummer admits he was "distraught" when the last reunion ended badly with financial squabbles and bitterness - because he had hoped it would be a great chance to end the Kiss story. Bitter Criss says, "We repeated history. It's like we had a great chance to make it right... and it didn't happen. "I would have loved to walk away hugging and kissing and really feeling like champions. " it would have to be fair baseball. It really would. For me, it would have to be really fair. And you know what I'm talking about. It would have to be fair... One, two, three, four - fair. Everybody walks away fair. Nobody walks away with more than the others." * WINEHOUSE VOWS TO STOP MISSING GIGS AFTER FATHER'S STERN WORDS British singer AMY WINEHOUSE has vowed not to miss any more concerts, after she was chastised by her father for her "bad" behaviour. I got into trouble, but I'm not gonna do that any more." * McFADDEN BATTLES KATONA FOR CUSTODY OF KIDS Irish pop star BRIAN McFADDEN has appealed for full custody of his children from ex-wife KERRY KATONA, because he is worried about their welfare. The former Westlife singer, 27, took his appeal to Taunton County Court in Somerset, England, on Friday , after becoming concerned about the well-being of Molly, five, and Lily-Sue, four, following Katona's run in with armed robbers at her Cheshire mansion last month . The British reality TV star and magazine columnist, 26, checked into London's The Priory clinic shortly after the ordeal. The couple have shared joint custody of their two children since their split in 2004 after 21 months of marriage. The kids have been staying with McFadden's mother Mairead for the last few weeks while Katona seeks professional counselling, but the McFaddens believe the kids are safer living with their paternal grandmother at her home in Ireland and have launched legal proceedings to secure full custody of the girls. A source tells Britain's The Sun newspaper: " is not trying to persecute Kerry. But his whole family are concerned for the girls' well-being after the break-in. The deceased man, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead on the scene in front of Rhames' Brentwood, California, home on Friday morning. The Pulp Fiction star was not at home at the time of the mauling, and is thought to be out of the country shooting a movie. Authorities have taken away four large dogs - three mastiffs and one bulldog - but cops believe the man is likely to have suffered a cardiac arrest as he was running away from the canines, because none of the wounds from the attack appear to have been life threatening. TMZ.com claims the 40-year-old man had been working as a live-in caretaker for Rhames for two years and had been caring and feeding the dogs every day. It is still not known who made the emergency call to police as nobody was on the property when authorities arrived at the scene. * ANDERSON QUITS HOLLYWOOD FOR MAGIC SHOWS PAMELA ANDERSON has consigned her acting career to the history books - because she prefers her new job as a magician's assistant. But, in a surprising turnaround, Trump is now lending his support to the troubled actress and her mother. He tells Access Hollywood, "Dina's a terrific woman as far as I'm concerned... "To say she is heartbroken is an understatement. Chris has begged her to stand by him but she has not decided what she is going to do." But Christine appears to be in two minds about a divorce, showing she still cares for the actor by visiting him at Elmley Prison on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent on Friday . I'm definitely able to work. "Truthfully, I'm not in a lot of pain anymore. It's more some discomfort. I don't have a headache, but I would say it's comparable to having a low-grade headache." However, Fischer admits she has a way to go to full recovery. She adds, "There are little things all the time that I don't realise I can't do until I try to do them, like parallel-park my car. It's the twisting behind me. It's certain muscles that you're not sure about yet. "I'm just going to try to roll with it. Everyone is so supportive and concerned. I know it's going to be OK." * THE THINGS THEY SAY: "If you can't be a mother, then don't be - and let somebody who can." Actress and new mum JAIME PRESSLY has words of advice for pop superstar BRITNEY SPEARS. * THE THINGS THEY SAY: "People who have car collections - I never understood that. Nas was announced as one of the performers at the upcoming free concert, which has been organised to "lift the spirits" of the Virginia Tech community, but the parents of victims are asking organisers to reconsider the line-up. Vincent J. Bove, who claims to be spokesman for seven of the victims' families, claims Nas' inclusion is disrespectful because the rapper's violent lyrics won't set a good tone at the event. Bove claims Nas' lyrics are "indicative of the moral decay in our society that contributes to acts of violence. "For a university official to condone it or to be clueless of what this person's track record is, it's unconscionable beyond belief." The concert, which is also to feature the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer, will take place on 6 September . Organisers state they have no plans to revise the line-up. Thirty-two people were shot dead at the Blacksburg, Virginia university when student Seung-Hui Cho staged a rampage, before killing himself in April . * COVERDALE SCARED BY BEAR INTRUSION WHITESNAKE frontman DAVID COVERDALE was recently forced to fight off a "huge" black bear that entered his property in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The rocker admits bear intrusions have become something he worries about daily - but he hopes he never has to chase one out of his home again. In a post on his website, the Here I Go Again singer recalls, "It appears we have a very real problem." Coverdale estimates one smaller bear broke into the swimming pool area of his home and took a swim before breaking through a window in a guest bedroom. The rocker adds, "Fortunately the guest left... but, unfortunately, left the sliding glass door open. This is where the bear came in. "I was in my office on the same floor, thank God, when Jaz burst in saying he'd heard something in the pool. I paged the house for my assistant Mikey, grabbed an air horn canister and ran out of my office just as the bear's head came out of the room. "Jesus, he was big... I ran toward him screaming, firing off the air horn and shocked the buggery out of him... He turned and scarpered out the way he came. I chased him into the garden and saw his size... Thank God he ran off... No way was I gonna wrestle this bugger!" It's black, white, Indian, it's a very diverse group. "Thank goodness that we're embraced by a lot of different people and a lot of different groups. The only way that you can actually exist... is by having mutual respect for each other and respecting the differences." * KORN DRUMMER QUIT BECAUSE OF BAND DEMANDS Former KORN star TERRY BOZZIO quit the group because his bandmates refused to make him a full-time member. The drummer quit earlier this year after failing to convince founders Jonathan Davis and James 'Munky' Shaffer to take him on as a bona-fide bandmate. Shaffer reveals, "There were certain demands that he made. We weren't ready to meet those demands. We just brought him in to write. "It's like some chick that you hang out with and all of a sudden they want to move in. What do you say to that? 'You were supposed to stay for the weekend, but you moved in all your .' It was kind of like that. "He was a great guy and a phenomenal drummer but the demands that he made were offensive. He wanted to be a member of the band, and that included ownership. Bozzio quit the heavy rockers in April , after he replaced David Silveria in December. * CORNELL KEEN ON SOUNDGARDEN RARITIES ALBUM Rocker CHRIS CORNELL is calling on former SOUNDGARDEN bandmate KIM THAYIL to follow through with his promise to release the band's rarest material - because he'd love to hear it again. The former Audioslave frontman insists a Soundgarden reunion is unlikely, but he's all for Thayil's plans to compile the grunge group's unreleased gems for an upcoming album. Cornell says, "I've left that in Kim's world, because Kim had always talked about wanting to be in charge of doing, like, a box set or a B-sides album. "That was something that he had mentioned years ago, and I'm sure at some point he will want to do it. "I don't know how much actual unreleased stuff is out there, but there's definitely some Soundgarden rarities stuff that the average fan has not heard and it would be nice to put out." She said, "She will always know that she was planned and wanted by the both of us." But actor/comedian Murphy has begged to differ in a statement released on Friday , in which he responds to his exgirlfriend's legal attack on him. The statement reads, "Eddie Murphy always has and will continue to honour his responsibilities as a father. Mr. Murphy and Ms. Brown dated very briefly and never made any plans of ANY sort. "He acknowledges paternity of the child Angel, and has paid child support to Ms. Brown as well as covering the expenses of her pregnancy. "Mr. Murphy views this as a private matter and as such, will not be making any further comments about it." And, with that, she has no concerns about her changing image. Richie claims to have gained 10 pounds already and says, "To me, numbers don't mean anything. If I gain 40 pounds, if I gain 50 pounds, then that's obviously what my body needs to do. I'm totally OK with that." * LOST DANES FEARED FOOLISH DEATH DURING SCOTTISH STROLL Actress CLAIRE DANES feared the worst when she became lost on a remote Scottish island after taking what she thought was a leisurely stroll. The 28-year-old was on the Isle Of Skye shooting new movie Stardust when a short walk turned into a nightmare. She says, "I decided to go for a walk one afternoon on the hotel grounds where we were staying on the Isle Of Skye. About an hour later I realised I was a little lost maybe and then an hour after that I realised I was devastatingly lost. "The weather is pretty erratic there. It started to rain, and then it started to pour, and then it started to rain horizontally at me. I was scared. It was getting dark and the sun was setting. "Occasionally, I would see a house in the distance and I would work up the courage to knock on the house and ask to use the phone or something. And I would get there and all the windows would be smashed and the house would be vacant. "I was starting to get spooked. In my head I saw these headlines: 'Idiotic American Actress Found Dead'. I couldn't see the hotel, I couldn't see anything. It was totally desolate and barren. "Finally, after about three hours, I happened upon a road that was paved. And 20 minutes later, a car passed by and I flagged it down in hysterics. He was
very sweet and asked where I was staying and I'd completely forgotten. I was just in such a panic, my mind went blank. Hartnett says, "I developed a connection with the kid. The third day he was already putting his arms around my leg and attached himself to me. He was sweet. "He was a kid, really squirrely and ran around a lot so we just goofed around. At the end of the day I got to give him back to his mom, so I was saved some of the parenting aspects. "I don't think I'm ready yet. I think I've got a little bit of time left in me before I become a parent." * PITT & JOLIE TO APPEAR ON NEW AUSSIE STAMP BRAD PITT and ANGELINA JOLIE are to feature on a new Australia Post stamp. Damon's wife Luciana gave birth to daughter Isabella in June 2006, just before the actor began filming The Bourne Ultimatum. He says, "I look so exhausted... Danes was telling host Leno she constantly watches re-runs of the beloved show, which ran from 1985 to 1992, when the surprise took place. She said, "I like TV a lot. I'm a big fan of The Golden Girls. I watch it avidly, I'm a big follower. I went as a Golden Girl to Halloween one year."
