Jurors have failed to reach a verdict in the Britney Spears
21 Oct 2008
The jury began deliberating before noon today at the Van Nuys Superior Court in Los Angeles, and met for about four hours before recessing without reaching a verdict.
The panel, featuring eight woman and four men is expected to continue on at 9a.m. Monday.
The charges relate to an accident when Spears hit a parked silver Mercedes-Benz in a Los Angeles car park.
A misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run was waived out of court after Spears agreed a financial settlement with the owner of the vehicle. However, the 26-year-old Womanizer singer was accused of flouting a law requiring her to obtain a California's driver's license.
Spears attorney's claim that her Louisiana license is valid and that she was planning on returning to her hometown anyway. Her defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan said on behalf of Spears: "She is a Louisiana girl, born there, lived there, and going back as soon as things are straightened out here."
The star's father, Jamie Spears testified on Thursday and also claimed that his daughter is planning on returning to her hometown, as soon as her custody battle over her two children is over.
Deputy City Attorney Michael Amerian told the jury that Spears should have swapped her Louisiana's driving license and obtained a Californian within 10 days, as required by the law.
Spears has not made an appearance at the hearing because the charge of misdemeanor count of driving without a license does not require her to attend. If convicted, the pop princess could face up to six months in jail.
