Pete Wentz & Ashlee Simpson

Pete Wentz defends decision to keep Ashlee Simpson's pregnancy a secret

2 June 2008

PETE WENTZ has defended his decision to keep his wife ASHLEE SIMPSON's pregnancy a secret from the media - insisting he wanted to "protect her and the baby".

The couple was dogged by baby rumours for weeks, but refused to confirm the news until Wednesday (28May08) - after Simpson had passed the first trimester of her pregnancy.

And the Fall Out Boy guitarist felt it was only right to keep the news quiet until his wife was given a full bill of health from doctors.

He tells MTV.com, "Every woman, no matter who they are or what they do for a living, has the right to wait at least three months before sharing this very personal news. We wanted to wait until after the first trimester before confirming anything, just like any other couple. "Being a boy I have no idea how to respond to such things and my first instinct was to protect her and the baby.

"It's insane that you can't let happy news brew in Hollywood. This wasn't about press or anything. It was about the health of the baby and trying to find a way to be happy with what should be the most happy time of our lives in the middle of a press blitz.

"I apologize to anyone who felt misinformed but the truth is, the person and growing baby is who I felt most loyal to protect and defend."

The pair wed in Encino, California earlier this month (17May08).

Congratulations on the news of your pregnancy. I think that people should stop wasting their time guessing who is and who isnt pregnant. If someone wants to tell the world then thats upto them we shouldnt force them to do it! Waiting 3 months was the right choice due to all the miscarriages etc, and what with being a celeb and having them run after u just for a shot of the belly, well that could lead to allsorts! Im sure the world can wait a few months to hear the wonderful news :D

congratulations, i think its a great thing that they kept it secret for the 1st trimester, look what heppened to lily allen, somebody told everyone her news, and then the world had to sit and watch her grief as she went through the agonising time after her miscarriage. good luck guys!!!

Congratulations to the lucky couple xlolx i hope it all goes well... It is good you kept it quiet until you were happy to announce the pregnancy, in stead of someone else finding it first and telling everybody!! Congratulations once again, I hope it all goes well!!:)=]]

I don't blame them. It was sensible given the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester. This is their business, noone else's. Good on them!

Good on you for sticking to your principals. I waited 12 weeks before telling anyone with both my pregnancies; some people wait 12 minutes...

I feel that no one should begrudge Ashlee or hubby for not saying anthing til after 3 months. Most doctors I know say or even recommend not telling anyone til about 3 months as the rist of miscarriage is greatly decreased by then. And I should know I have just had my second child.
