Nicole Kidman's embattled husband broke his silence on his battle with addiction in an online video message to his fans. Urban entered the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs, California, on October 19 2006. Urban says in the video that he originally planned on spending 30-days at the facility, but ended up there for 90-days instead. But the star, who married Kidman in an all-star wedding in Sydney, Australia, last June, insists there was 'no cataclysmic event' that pushed him into rehab. And he thanks his wife for being 'extraordinarily strong and loving.' Urban, 39, appears in the video, apparently filmed in a living room, wearing an open necked shirt. "I just wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about the last 3 months," Urban said. "On October 19 I checked into the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs California with the support of my wife and family and friends for what I thought would be a 30-day stay. "Now, there was no big, cataclysmic event that happened before I went in, but SMALL things were happing in my life, a lot of small moments were starting to accumulate, that were telling me very loud and clear that I was a long way from my program of recovery - and that were making my life unmanageable". "I got to the point where I wanted to go in and get treatment," Urban says in the video. "So I went in on that day it was far from an ideal time to go in and get treatment. "While I was in there was in there, I had my birthday, my record was released, I missed Thanksgiving and all of the Holidays, so it was a time that had a lot of consequences". "The reason why it was so long too, was that during the first 30-days I learned what they say in there that abstinence is the ticket into the movie, it is not the movie. "So learning about abstinence was one thing but then there was all this other area of my life to start learn about, so 30 days became 60, and 60 became 90. "With each week that passed I found myself really learning to surrender, especially with my career and playing music, because that is all I have ever done". "I love playing guitar and touring and I was going to be doing a lot of that right when I went in "I had amazing support from everyone when I was in there, I can't tell you guys how much that help me". "I felt very, very loved and supported and it made the time go by, I never felt alone and during that time I started to learn a lot about myself and how I got to be in the position I am in right now. "It is hard to quantify what I learned in 90-days but it has been one of the most impactful times in my whole life". "I want to thank everyone out there who is watching this for your support." Urban thanked his fans for their hundreds of cards, emails and letters, which he says helped him get through the 'lonely days'. "There was plenty of those there. My wife stayed extraordinarily strong and loving and my friends and family were there, and man, it has just been really overwhelming, I feel so much gratitude, and it feels really good to have gone through it and to be where I am right now". "I am starting on that road to getting back to doing what I love and that is playing music." The video comes just days after Urban appeared live in German TV, playing his hit song 'Once in a Lifetime.' During an interview on the 'Wetten dass?' show Urban said the song was 'inspired by my marriage'. "It's a good, life-changing happening in my life. "I think when you find your once-in-a-lifetime love, that's what everyboy's looking for. |
